Nomads are also known as travelers in modern-day contexts, communities of people who move from one place to another, rather than settling permanently in one location. This freedom and forward-thinking that we found on our nomadic journey is what inspired us to do what we do, and how we do it to this day.
The dream of creating our sustainable style began out of the back of a small VW van, (cliché you might say) with rolls of fabric and sewing machines. We relied almost entirely on the kindness of our friends, who would let us use their living rooms as sewing studios and encumber their bathrooms with dye baths. Gotta love your own tribe. After many loops around the festival tour and winters spent abroad, we set foot in beautiful Nelson, BC where we made the discovery of an old but yet new fiber; hemp.
Luckily for us, the green fabrics that were appearing at the turn of the millennia were just starting to be soft and not-as-hip-looking. Having been used by our ancestors for some thousands of years around the world, hemp had been lost from our heritage. Partly because of the oppression of its sister plant, cannabis, but also because the processes used to weave the plant into fabric were pretty rudimentary, going green is one thing, but looking as if you just put on a potato bag is another. Now, 10 years later, we have grown along with our partners in crime and we have pushed to develop a variety of stretch textiles ranging from organic cotton, soy and bamboo that are truly unique to our brand.
Even though Nomads is now an international company with retailers stretching to almost all continents, we value our grassroot feel and take pride in our one-on-one service. There is no automated phone system here, if you call us, will get you the information you need within seconds. Along with a devotion for eco textile and lifestyle, we also take pride in employing fair labor in the construction of all our garments. Again by using grassroot and reputable eco-factories in China.
We now offer two highly-sought-after collections of our own funky clothes per year in the most comfy yet tough natural fiber available to mankind. We believe that by creating more sustainability, we are moving in the right direction. Green fibers are the way of the future, and we will keep pushing its quality forward with innovative and modern designs that perfectly reflect our place and time on this wonderful planet.
