COS launched with a UK flagship store on London’s Regent Street in March 2007. COS stores are since found in prime locations in major European cities in Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, the UK, Ireland, France, Spain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Poland, Italy and Austria. In addition COS now has 6 stores in Asia; Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Tianjin and also in Kuwait and Dubai.
The COS collection comprises fashion essentials, iconic items, reinvented classics and the latest trends for men and women. COS offers stylish wardrobe perennials where the quality of finish, fabric and fit contend with ready-to-wear only at far more accessible prices. COS’ business idea is fashion and quality at the best price and aims to offer the best price on comparable items.
The COS collections are created by an in-house team of designers and buyers. COS does not have its own factories. Collections are produced by approximately 60 independent suppliers with 60% of production in Europe and 40% in Asia.
New items will appear in store every week. The COS store environment adds to the shopping experience with a modern, clean-line interior designed by noted architect William Russell, who has designed store interiors for Alexander McQueen and Margaret Howell. Stores average approximately 450 square meters in size.
COS pays close attention to essential items and trend-alert pieces as well as reworking established shapes like the classic tux or little black dress; each item bares a subtle design twist which gives the product a contemporary edge. Accessories, leisurewear and casual product all form part of the COS fold. 80% of the collection is womenswear and 20% menswear. Sizes range from 34-44 for women and 46-54 for men; casual sizing is S – XL and suiting 46-54.
For Christmas 2008 COS introduced a small childrenswear collection, this was followed in March 2009 by a full collection. There is one main collection a season with select items gradually introduced throughout the season. The collection is half girlswear and half boyswear. Clothing sizes range from age 1 to 8 (86-128)and 27-30 for shoes.
COS is part of the H&M group and compliments H&M as it is founded on the same business concept of ‘fashion and quality at the best price’. COS prices start off where H&M’s end. This increased price level allows COS to deliver product with a high quality and high design content, which is housed within design-led smaller-scale stores where customer service is key to COS’ shopping environment.
COS, as part of the H&M group, benefits from H&M’s financial strength and retailing experience. COS also adopts H&M’s strong ethical values. COS suppliers follow H&M’s code of conduct which was drawn up in 1997 based on the Convention of the Rights of the Child and the ILO’s Declaration on Fundamental Principles and Rights at Work. COS does not sell real fur and only uses leather derived from animals that have been bred for meat production.
